In 1979, California’s vast highways became a grisly stage for a string of murders. As authorities stumbled upon the victims, the brutality of the crimes became painfully clear. Each victim bore the chilling signature of a serial killer: death by strangulation and stabbing.

Unlike the typical lone wolf serial killers of the era, this one operated with a chilling twist — he had accomplices. Dubbed the “Freeway Killer,” he terrorized Los Angeles County and Orange County with the help of his partners in crime. Armed with an arsenal ranging from an icepick to a tire iron to a jack handle, this murderer left a trail of gruesome killings along California’s highways.

Born into a turbulent family in Connecticut on January 8, 1947, he was smack dab in the middle of three brothers. With an alcoholic father and a mother who was rarely around, Bonin found himself under the care of his grandfather,a convicted child molester.

His childhood was a rocky road, marked by early rebellion. At the tender age of eight, he made a daring escape from home. By his teenage years, he was already on the wrong side of the law, landing himself in a juvenile detention center for swiping license plates. It was there, among older, hardened boys, that he faced…
